The Multi-Team Trap: How Many Jerseys are Too Many?

February 16, 20263 min read

All right, family, let’s huddle up for a second because we need to have a serious heart-to-heart.

I was sitting in the stands the other day, watching the chaos of a Saturday morning tournament, and a question popped into my head that I just couldn't shake: How many teams are too many teams?

Seriously. Look around. We’ve got church leagues. We’ve got AAU. We’ve got the local mom-and-pop tournaments. We’ve got 7-on-7 football, travel softball, volleyball, baseball, soccer… if there’s a ball or a net involved, there is a league for it. And if there is a league for it, there is a coach calling your phone telling you that your child is the "missing piece" to their championship puzzle.

But let’s be real for a minute. Why do we say yes?

The "Get Out of My House" Factor

First off, I get it. I hear you. When you have multiple children running around the house like they’re auditioning for a WWE special, the sound of a coach’s voice is like music to your ears.

You want them to play because you don't want to feed them for three hours. You want them to go out that door because you need your living room back. You want them to burn off that energy so they might—just might—fall asleep before 9:00 PM without a negotiation process that requires a UN mediator.

We love our babies, but mama needs her house back! So, when the phone rings, we sign the waiver, pay the fee, and grab the orange slices.

The Third-Grade Marathon

But y’all, we have to talk about the limit. I remember one of my boys—bless his heart—who was playing on two different AAU basketball teams at the same time. In the third grade.

We were at a tournament, and it was pure madness. He finished a game for Team A, ran off the court sweating, literally swapped jerseys while walking to the next court, and suited up for Team B. He played six games in one day. Six games. For an eight-year-old!

I looked at him and thought, Is he even having fun, or is he just trying to remember which basket he’s shooting at?

Signs You’ve Crossed the Line

If you’re wondering if you’ve hit the "too many teams" threshold, ask yourself these three things:

  1. The Trunk Test: Is your car trunk currently holding more than four different types of sports equipment and three different colors of Gatorade? If you have to dig past a bucket of softballs to find the jumper cables, you might be overscheduled.

  2. The Jersey Confusion: Has your child ever started running a play for the team they played for yesterday instead of the one they’re playing for now?

  3. The "Who Are You?" Moment: Do you recognize the coaches better than you recognize your own neighbors?

The Bottom Line

Listen, sports are amazing. They teach discipline, teamwork, and how to handle a loss with grace. But our kids—and let’s be honest, we—need a minute to breathe.

When we’ve got them in three different leagues at once, are they getting better, or are they just getting tired? Are we building athletes, or are we just building a very expensive collection of polyester jerseys?

I’m going to ask you again, because I really want to know: In your house, how many teams is too many? When do you draw the line and say, "Sorry, Coach, we're taking this Saturday off"?

Drop a comment and let me know your "too many teams" horror stories. We’re all in this playbook together!
