If Your Suitcase Could Talk, What Would It Say?
Let me ask you something, and I want you to really sit with it: if your suitcase could talk, what would it say?
Because mine has stories. Lord, does mine have stories.
I've been a D1 college football coach's wife for over 30 years. Thirty years of packed bags, red-eye flights, cold bleachers, and hotel breakfasts. Thirty years of raising two young men who turned a mama's prayers into a purpose. So when I look at a suitcase, I don't just see luggage. I see every early morning, every long drive, every "we'll figure it out" moment that built the family we are today.
And baby, the bags are still packed. Because we are still going.
Two Boys. Two Sports. One Mama Doing the Most.
People ask me all the time how I did it with two athletes in two completely different worlds. Here's the honest answer: one carpool at a time, one gym at a time, one leap of faith at a time.
My oldest, KJ, chose the gridiron. He became a national champion in college and went on to win a Super Bowl — and just this week he signed with the San Francisco 49ers and packed that suitcase all over again, heading west to camp in Santa Clara.
Now let me tell you what that suitcase really carries. Since he came into the league, KJ has worn seven NFL jerseys in about four years — the Washington Commanders, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles (where he got his Super Bowl ring), the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and now the 49ers. Seven cities. Seven playbooks. Seven times somebody told my boy to prove himself all over again.
And every single time, he zipped that bag up and went to work.
I'm not telling you that to brag. I'm telling you because that is grit, and grit is not an accident — it is coached. It is built at the kitchen table, in the hard conversations, in the "we don't quit in this family" moments that happen long before anybody's on TV. We raised our boys on a simple truth: your name doesn't change with your uniform. You carry who you are with you. Talent gets you drafted. Character keeps you in the league. Determination is what packs the bag one more time when a weaker spirit would've stayed home.
That's the kind of thing I sit down and coach families on — because the mindset that keeps a young man employed across seven teams is the same mindset that helps your child survive a hard prep school, a tough coach, or a season that doesn't go their way.

My youngest, Isaiah Henry, took to the hardwood. He's a D1 guard at Queens University of Charlotte, and last season his team did something no Queens team had ever done — they cut down the nets as conference tournament champions and earned the school's first-ever invitation to the NCAA National Tournament. Baby, my son played on the biggest stage in college basketball. As a No. 15 seed, the Royals went toe-to-toe with mighty No. 2 Purdue in the first round. Now, we lost that game — Goliath had a good night. But here is the part this mama will never forget: my freshman checked into a national tournament game, took one shot, and buried a three-pointer. One shot. One make. One hundred percent. You cannot script that. Before he ever stepped on that college court, he sharpened his game in a serious basketball prep environment — the kind of place that trains you like a pro before you're old enough to vote.
One in football. One in basketball. Both raised in the same house, by the same rules, chasing the same thing: be great, and be grateful.
Let's Talk About Those Boarding Schools, Y'all
Here's where the suitcase gets serious.
If your child has real talent — the kind that makes coaches stop and stare — there is going to come a day when the conversation turns to leaving home. Prep academies. Basketball boarding schools. Elite training programs in another city, another state, sometimes another time zone.
And I'm not gonna lie to you: it is hard. Nobody prepares you for handing your baby a suitcase and watching them walk toward a dream that lives three states away.
But here's what I learned, and what I want you to hear from a mama who has actually done it:
These programs can change the whole trajectory of your child's future. The right prep school or academy can put your kid in front of the right coaches, the right competition, and the right classrooms. It can be the difference between "maybe" and a full ride. It can turn a talented kid into a recruited one.
But — and this is a big but — not every program is the right program. Some are built to develop your child. Some are built to use them. Learning to tell the difference is a skill, and it is exactly the kind of thing I wish somebody had sat me down and explained before I figured it out the hard way.
We Gotta Get That Money
Let me say the quiet part out loud: we gotta get that money.
I don't mean that in a greedy way. I mean scholarships. I mean opportunities. I mean the very real dollars that a college education and an athletic path can put back in your family's pocket — money that changes lives for generations, not just for four years.
Between the two of my boys, I have watched this play out at the highest level of college and pro sports. I have seen what it costs, and I have seen what it pays. And the parents who come out ahead are almost never the ones with the most talented kid in the room. They're the ones with the most information.
They know what questions to ask a prep school before they sign.
They know how recruiting actually works — not the fairy tale, the real thing.
They know how to protect their child's eligibility, their schedule, and their sanity.
They know how to turn a talented kid into a scholarship kid.
That's the stuff nobody hands you in a brochure. That's the stuff I had to learn on the road, with a suitcase in one hand and a prayer in the other.
