From NIL Money to Community Magic: How One Student-Athlete is Blazing a New Trail

March 04, 20264 min read

Admit it. When you hear "NIL" (Name, Image, and Likeness), your mind probably jumps to a few standard images. Flashy new cars. Top-tier luxury apartments. The latest must-have tech. And while it's fantastic that young athletes are finally able to benefit from their talent and hard work in this way, there's another, less-talked-about, but incredibly powerful use of this new era of opportunity.

This weekend, my heart was just full of a specialized kind of pride. The kind that makes you want to shout from the rooftops and say, "That's my son!" I'm going to tell you the 'what' first, because it's just so special, and then we'll back into the story of how far we've truly come.

A Story of Two Sons and a Changing Game

Let's rewind a few years. My oldest son, KJ, was a standout athlete. Like many others, we saw the incredible potential of his platform. We wanted to use his Name, Image, and Likeness, not for cars or fancy clothes, but as a fundraiser. Our goal was simple: to give back to the community that raised him, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The response from the powers that be at the time? A resounding "no." The rules were clear: you could use the school's colors, but you couldn't use the school's name. You couldn't say "Clemson." You couldn't even put his full name and position ("KJ Henry, Defensive End, Clemson"). It was a frustrating and disheartening limitation, one that felt like a huge missed opportunity for everyone.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape is unrecognizable. The NCAA rules have finally shifted, opening up a world of possibilities for young people to not only secure their financial futures but also to become powerful forces for good in their communities. And my youngest son, Isaiah, is a prime example of someone who is seizing that chance with both hands and a whole lot of heart.

Using His Platform for Purpose

This weekend, Isaiah didn't head down to the nearest luxury car dealership. Instead, he channeled his NIL efforts back into his childhood community, to a place that held special meaning for him – his home church.

Isaiah decided to use his platform to create a moment that would resonate far beyond a single weekend. He sponsored 16 young people, kids just starting out, and treated them to an unforgettable experience. First, he provided free tickets to a thrilling basketball game, giving them a chance to cheer, scream, and soak up the electric atmosphere of live sports.

But the kindness didn't stop there. After the final buzzer, he treated all 16 kids to a post-game meal – the simple, comforting, and always-a-hit choice of McDonald's. For these kids, it was more than just dinner and a show. It was a moment of feeling seen, of being valued, and of being given a glimpse into the kind of positive impact one person, with a bit of focus and dedication, can have.

A Call to Action for a New Generation of Athletes

Watching this unfold, my mind couldn't help but wander back to that moment with KJ, the frustration and the sense of a door slammed shut. The contrast is stark, a powerful reminder of how much progress has been made. But it also serves as a critical point of reflection.

We see the cars, the jewelry, the luxury lifestyle on social media. But we need to be talking, just as loudly, about this other side of the NIL coin. We need to be highlighting and celebrating the stories of athletes who are using their brand, their voice, and yes, their money, to uplift their communities, to support causes they believe in, and to pave a path for others to follow.

This is my challenge to you: Look around. Who are the student-athletes in your community? Your school? Your church? What are they doing with their newly-found platform and resources? We need to be encouraging them, supporting them, and most importantly, we need to be celebrating the ones who are using their NIL powers for purpose. Let's make this the other side of the NIL story, the story of community, of opportunity, and of the heart of the athlete. Because at the end of the day, that's the kind of legacy that truly lasts.
