Eyes on the Prize: Why the Youth Sports Journey is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

February 18, 20263 min read

We’ve all been there. You’re sitting in the bleachers on a Tuesday night, watching a sea of jerseys run up and down the court or field. You look to your left and see a parent timing drills on their phone. You look to your right and hear someone whispering about which eighth grader just got an "offer."

In that moment, it’s so easy to let the "right now" consume you. You start wondering: Are we doing enough? Why isn't my kid starting? Should we be at that elite camp three states away?

Mama, take a deep breath. Shake off the sideline noise. I have a reminder for you today that I’ve lived through twice over: Don’t get distracted by the "right now." Tomorrow is coming.

The Overnight Myth

In the world of social media highlights and viral dunk videos, we’ve been conditioned to believe that elite athletes are manufactured overnight. We see the finished product—the jersey on draft day or the signed Letter of Intent—and we forget about the decade of "boring" work that came before it.

I tell you this because raising D1, D2, or D3 athletes—raising players who have the character to match their skill—doesn't happen in a weekend. There are a lucky few who are born with "it" and find success instantly, but for the most part? For my kids, and probably for yours, we had to work.

The Power of the Early Start

When I look back at my children—one an NFL player and the other a D1 college basketball player—people often ask me what the secret sauce was in high school. The truth? The foundation was laid long before they ever put on a varsity jersey.

We started when they were five years old.

Now, I don’t mean we were running pro-style drills at five. I mean we treated their development like we treated their chores. It was a part of their daily life. It was about discipline, consistency, and showing up even when you don’t feel like it. Just like you don’t wait until high school to teach a child how to clean their room or be a person of integrity, you don't wait until the recruiting window opens to build an athlete’s work ethic.

Their Journey, Their Testimony

I know the pressure is real. It’s hard not to get frustrated when you don’t have a college coach calling your child’s name yet. It’s hard to stay patient when it feels like everyone else is "getting ahead."

But here is the Playbook secret: Your child’s journey is their journey.

It doesn’t have to look like the kid’s next door. It doesn’t have to follow a specific timeline to be valid or successful. Every practice, every loss, and every "not yet" is part of their testimony. If it came easy, they wouldn't develop the grit required to stay at the top once they get there.

Stay the Course

This is a marathon, not a sprint. If you run a marathon like it’s a 100-meter dash, you’re going to burn out by mile three, and so is your athlete.

If you’re feeling discouraged today because the "right now" looks a little messy, remember:

  1. Consistency over Intensity: Small things done daily at age 5, 8, and 12 matter more than a "get recruited quick" scheme at age 17.

  2. Focus on the Foundation: Work on the character, the footwork, and the fundamentals. The rest will follow.

  3. Silence the Noise: Comparison is the thief of joy and the ultimate distraction.

Don’t get frustrated. Don’t get distracted. Keep your eyes on the horizon, keep putting in the work, and trust the process.

Tomorrow is coming, and it’s going to be worth the wait.
